A Field Day of Discovery

Recently, our Year 12 Geography students embarked on an exciting adventure to Towra Point Aquatic Reserve in Botany Bay to investigate intertidal wetlands as Ecosystems at Risk. The day began with students gathering bright and early at IGS before catching a bus to Bonna Point Reserve.

Throughout the day, students engaged in hands-on activities, exploring the diverse wetland ecosystem. Highlights included searching the salt marshes for crabs and wading through the seagrass to discover Pygmy Squid, Pipefish, shrimp, and seahorses.

One student, Finn Walsh, remarked, “It was amazing to see so many different species up close and understand their role in the ecosystem.” Kara added, “Spending a sunny day at the beach while learning about these incredibly important marine ecosystems was an unforgettable experience.”

This fieldwork provided invaluable insights into the delicate balance of wetland ecosystems and the importance of their conservation.
