A Midsummer Night’s Dream Enchants

By Rita Morabito

IGS Drama students from Years 9 to 12 worked tirelessly to create a beautifully rich production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Week 4. With four sold-out shows crafted skillfully by Damien Ryan from Sport for Jove and IGS Drama Alum Isabella Milkovitsch, students were exposed to a beautiful professional theatrical experience in our wonderful Commedia Playhouse Theatre.

The artistic vision for the play, the set, and the costumes created a visual tapestry of colour that brought inanimate objects to life and transported those who were watching, to different worlds through portals and pure magic.

We could not be more proud of the fabulous ensemble cast that performed in our Senior Production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Congratulations to all involved in this huge success!

ABOUT THE PLAY

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is celebrated not only for its poetry and supernatural elements but also for its exploration of human emotions such as young love, jealousy, and loyalty. Shakespeare captures the tumultuousness of youth and the tensions between parents and children. The play radiates optimism, with the Fairy Kingdom upending the mortal world to reveal deeper insights and happiness.

The labourers in the play, aspiring to greatness through theatre, highlight the transformative power of art. The story unfolds in a dreamlike state, challenging the audience to discern reality from illusion. Shakespeare’s work interweaves various mythologies, resembling an art gallery where diverse cultures coexist. Theseus and Hippolyta symbolise a bridge between the mortal and fairy realms, akin to artists creating new worlds.

The Elizabethan era’s superstition and folklore find parallels in the world of art, where the natural and supernatural merge seamlessly. Art provides a stage for expressing intense human experiences and serves as an escape for the play’s young characters. The Fairyland represents our inner desires and guilt, offering rebirth through an artistic journey. The production envisions the fairy kingdom as a blend of Eastern and Western art, transforming an art gallery into a magical forest where the characters’ adventures unfold until harmony is restored.
