Over the past few weeks I, along with my co-director Gorgio Apostalopolus have attended afterschool and weekend rehearsals for the musical Mamma Mia!, in the process of creating a behind the scenes video. We spoke to many of the cast and crew and have created an interview catalogue of what they had to say.
The most common idea that people expressed was one of unity and friendship as a result of the production. Working towards the single goal of creating a great show that the audience will love has connected people across year groups, like no other project could. Mamma Mia! allows each student to play to their individual creative strengths, and truly allows individuals to shine.
Giorgio played a leading role in IGS’ production of The Addams Family two years ago.
He writes: “My experience with musical productions at IGS has been truly amazing. At first, I was nervous and unsure of myself, but the incredibly supportive teachers helped me build confidence and step out of my comfort zone. They encouraged me to grow as a performer and believe in my abilities. Being part of the productions also allowed me to connect with students from different year groups, which helped me make new friendships I wouldn’t have formed otherwise. I never imagined I’d enjoy being part of these shows so much. The sense of teamwork, creativity, and excitement has opened so many opportunities. It has also taught me valuable discipline and time management skills—balancing rehearsals with school work pushed me to stay organised and motivated, and helped me grow both on stage and in the classroom.”
Mamma Mia! will undoubtedly be another great musical triumph. Tickets will go on sale on April 29.
