Year 11 Biology students and their teachers, Ms Arapakis and Ms Edwards, ventured to the incredible Long Reef Rock Platform at Collaroy yesterday for a day of mandatory fieldwork.
What started as a very crisp morning quickly turned into a beautiful winter’s day. The purpose of the activity was to sharpen the students’ first-hand investigation skills, specifically relating to the distribution and abundance of species on the rock platform using standard ecological sampling techniques.
The students also investigated the symbiotic relationships of several organisms on the rock platform and hypothesised the impact of both biotic and abiotic selection pressures present in the different littoral zones of the rock platform.
Despite getting their feet wet, everyone had a great day, culminating in the exciting discovery of two very large octopuses!
