Characters Collide, Laughter Follows

by Rita Morabito

Both Year 11 Drama classes performed their first assessment task in the Commedia Playhouse theatre to an audience of family and friends. This task gave students the opportunity to use the diverse characters and script from Gurney’s play as a base.

They designed costumes, posters and programs and some wrote additional scene moments that could be integrated into this episodic play. Students played multiple characters. This task helps to identify student strengths as performers, writers and designers. We travelled through time and countries via choices of music, accents and decades to create a wonderfully entertaining night of theatre.

Hear what the students had to say about the production and performance process.

“As I stood on stage amongst my peers and the final scene of The Dining Room came to a close and we took our bows, I felt an immense sense of pride and gratitude to be able to work with such a talented cast and with whom I had such an amazing experience while working on the show. I feel I have come a long way in in my ability to create characters, as some may consider some of the roles I played to be quite similar in terms of their controlling nature and themes in the scenes, but after working closely with Ms Morabito I feel I was able to display my range as an actor creating unique and very distinct characters in each scene.” Connor

“On Wednesday March 26, the two Year 11 Drama classes merged to put on an incredible production of The Dining Room. Together, we captivated the audience and brought them into the world of Gurney’s play. My personal goals going into this performance were to be able to create vastly different characters, making sure they each had their own personality, mannerisms and vocal qualities and to not break character focus at any time. I believe I successfully achieved this. It was so much fun to be able to work together with the other class and I hope that we get to do it again. The atmosphere was unmatched and I loved performing this amazing play.” Oscar

“I was cast to bring life on stage to a scene I had written and I was nervous to discover whether the scene would have a positive reception. I felt extremely proud of my classmates who delivered exceptional performances which really highlighted the reliance on comedy in the scene. Decked out as the masterfully costumed Rodney.  His body language and vocalisations were the antithesis of the Father character I played earlier.” Gretel

“I am most proud of performing in the scene that Anna wrote. It is an incredibly beautiful scene that takes place in an abandoned school dining room.” Zoe
