Year 11 Design and Technology students visited Shape, an exhibition that features a selection of students’ exemplary 2023 HSC major projects from Design and Technology, Industrial Technology, and Textiles and Design. They also attended the seminar where an experienced HSC marker explained each component of the portfolio. During this session, students examined the marking guidelines, unpacked projects in the exhibition, and also got a chance to hear from an industry professional applying the design and technology process to their projects.
Students’ Insights
“Monday’s DT excursion not only opened my eyes to see how extreme and unique people’s HSC projects were. This not only inspired me but captivated me in a way I haven’t seen in DT before. The people were nice and consistently made us feel welcome. Each speaker was interesting and insightful in the topic they were presenting to us. I will use all the information and knowledge that I learned for my DT year 12 project, thank you.” — Jamie King.
“This excursion was a great opportunity to get inspiration from previous major works and start brainstorming what we might create for our works. The seminar was delivered by Design Technology HSC markers and we learnt how we could write our portfolios and also had the chance to speak with an Industrial Designer who has worked on many incredible projects to get inspiration for our projects and future careers.” — Amy Unsworth
“The excursion was enjoyable. I loved seeing everyone’s major works, seeing their creativity, and how varied everything was. It also helped seeing how people managed time and completed both practical and theoretical aspects of the task. Also, I am now more aware of the resources we have as students to help us and feel more confident in my ability to complete my major work. It was very helpful hearing from somebody who works in design, as I hope to go into a similar field of work. It gave me an idea of what paths I can take to get there.” — Elka Donnelly
Thanks to Riya Parmar Art and Design Teacher who accompanied the students during the visit. This experience not only gave them the opportunity to visualise and read through sample portfolios and projects but also got students inspired.
