Cultural Experiences and Adventures in Sydney

By German exchange student Ellie

Hello! Servus Spezl! My name is Ellie, and I’m a 16-year-old student from a small town in Southern Germany called Bavaria. I’m currently in the midst of a six-week exchange program in Sydney, with four of those weeks being spent at IGS. This adventure has already been an eye-opening experience, offering me a unique glimpse into Australian education, culture, and providing me with invaluable work experience.

At IGS, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to several departments, including the Library, the Language Department, and the Media Department. My tasks have ranged from sorting and translating book titles to preparing worksheets for German lessons and helping with social media content. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed these roles, feeling genuinely part of the IGS community.

I’ve also been given the opportunity to delve into Aboriginal studies, a chance to learn about Australia’s rich First Nations cultures. Joining the German Club, Book Club, and Sustainability Club has been a fantastic way to connect with fellow students, making sure I never have to spend a break alone.

Exploring Sydney has been a highlight of my exchange. From the iconic Sydney Opera House to the vibrant Mardi Gras parade and the Lunar New Year celebrations, every experience has been enriching. I’ve been struck by the unique sounds of the city, like the traffic lights, which remind me of laser shooters from Star Wars, and the dramatic shift from a chilly German winter to the warm, humid Australian summer.

Outdoor activities have been a significant part of my stay. Whether it’s surfing, hiking, or simply soaking up the sun, I’ve tried to embrace the Australian love for the outdoors. I’ve even faced my fears of Australia’s notorious wildlife, having a close encounter with a Red-bellied Black Snake during one of my hikes!

This exchange is shaping my view of the future, particularly my growing interest in becoming a teacher. Working closely with educators at IGS has given me a real sense of the profession and all it entails. Maintaining a balance between my studies, cultural engagements, and outdoor activities has been crucial, helping me manage my schoolwork from Germany while fully immersing myself in this experience.

As I continue my journey here, I’m excited about what the next weeks will bring. This exchange program has already taught me so much about myself, Australia, and the world at large. I’m grateful for the warmth and welcome I’ve received from everyone at IGS and my host family in Glebe, who’ve made Sydney feel like a home away from home.

The memories and lessons from this experience will undoubtedly stay with me long after I return to Germany, shaping my path forward in ways I’m only beginning to understand. Here’s to more adventures and learning in the wonderful land of Australia!
