On Friday 25 October Year 5 students at IGS took part in a colourful and lively Indonesian dance and percussion workshop hosted by Suara Indonesian Dance Company. The full-day incursion immersed students in the rich musical traditions of Indonesia, from traditional body percussion to vocal melodies and intricate dance movements.
Throughout the day, students donned Randai drumming pants and explored the connection between movement and sound through traditional Indonesian songs and dance routines. Authentic Indonesian street food provided a flavourful touch, adding a tangible cultural experience to the event. Instructors guided students in movements that mimic the waves and flow of Acehnese landscapes, showcasing Indonesia’s natural beauty.
To celebrate their newly acquired skills, Year 5 students delivered a vibrant performance for their families in the school hall. Head of Primary Music Nik Glass expressed pride in the students’ engagement. “It’s wonderful seeing the students immersed in such a rich musical tradition. The day’s multi-sensory experience challenged them through movement and song, offering both enjoyment and a cultural connection.”
The event marked an invaluable opportunity for students to celebrate the diversity of musical traditions that shape our world.
Thank you to Head of Primary School Music Nik Glass and the Primary School Music Department for organising this opportunity.
