IGS Year 6 students plunged into the energetic world of Taiko drumming on Wednesday, immersing themselves in the resonant beats and movements of traditional Japanese music with the renowned Taikoz ensemble.
The all-day event was structured around a series of interactive workshops that aimed to engage students in drumming, movement and vocal performances. Not only was this an opportunity for students to develop new artistic skills, but it also aligned with IGS values of diversity, authenticity and connectedness. By participating in these sessions, students gained a deeper appreciation of Japanese culture.
The students rotated through four activities in small groups, including sessions on Onikenbai – an intense and culturally rich dance and drumming style from Japan’s Iwate Prefecture. Additionally, they explored Dirt Rhythms, a Taiko drumming piece by former Taikoz member Anton Lock, inspired by Australia’s red earth landscapes. Through dynamic exercises, students learned the power and precision integral to Taiko, fostering not only musical skill but also teamwork and focus.
The incursion concluded with a special performance for family and friends, where students proudly showcased their new skills and celebrated the artistry of Japanese drumming.
