When Tony Armstrong, a proud Gamilaroi man and rising star of Australian television, visited the Bibliothèque, excitement filled the room. Tony brought his love of storytelling to our Kindergarten to Year 2 students.
Tony, known to many as the sports presenter on ABC News Breakfast, read from his debut picture book, George the Wizard, captivating the young audience. The story of George, a young wizard discovering his powers, had the children wide-eyed, hanging on every word.
Tony shared stories of his journey, from growing up in rural NSW and playing professional AFL for Adelaide, Collingwood, and Sydney, to becoming the first Indigenous AFL commentator on commercial radio. He spoke to the children about his culture, encouraging pride in diversity and identity.
Beyond being a talented storyteller, Tony’s warmth and humour made for a special morning, as he stayed after questions to hang out with the Koori Club, sharing a yarn and a snack. His visit was a true celebration of stories, culture, and connection.
Thank you to the Bibliothèque team for giving the students an opportunity to meet such an inspiring figure.
