Geography Deep Dives

It’s not every day you tell your parents that School work requires a snorkel, a wetsuit, and a deep dive into Sydney Harbour.

That’s exactly what the lucky Year 10 and 11 students of Elective Geography and Biology got as they traded in their textbooks for fins in a fieldwork excursion that offered an experience beyond the classroom.

Organised by Land’s Edge, the program was part of the Oceanography topic and involved a comparative study of kelp forests and sea urchins. The students participated in a snorkel survey across two prime spots, Chowder Bay and Balmoral.

The focus of the day was understanding the abundance and diversity of sea urchins, as well as studying the presence of kelp forests, which play a crucial role in marine ecosystems. To accurately survey the area, students used transects and learned diving hand signals and techniques, further immersing themselves in the world of marine fieldwork.

Fieldwork doesn’t get more hands-on than this. The day provided a special opportunity to explore Sydney’s unique marine biology – an experience these students are likely to remember for years to come.

Thank you to Mr Fedele for organising this excursion.
