Honouring Women Who Inspire

In anticipation of International Women’s Day, IGS celebrated with an assembly the achievements and contributions of women, both within our School Community and beyond. The assembly, led by GirlUp, opened with a reflection from our Head Girl and Head Boy on the significance of International Women’s Day, highlighting this year’s theme: Accelerate Action.

Principal Shauna Colnan delivered an inspiring address, encouraging students and staff to take a moment to appreciate the remarkable women in their lives. She shared the often-overlooked yet integral role of Isabell St Leon in the foundation of IGS. While many are familiar with the legacy of Professor Reg St Leon, Principal Colnan shed light on the tireless dedication of Isabell, who stood alongside him every step of the way. A gifted educator and a driving force in the School’s formative years, Isabell not only taught German but also took on countless responsibilities—from driving the School bus to ensuring the School remained financially viable.

The assembly was made even more special with the presence of Isabell and her son Carl, who recently shared their recollections of the School’s early days. Their reflections now form a valuable part of the School’s archival history, preserving the untold story of a woman whose unwavering commitment shaped the IGS we know today. In a heartfelt moment, Principal Colnan acknowledged Isabell’s sacrifices and enduring legacy, expressing deep gratitude on behalf of the entire IGS Community. Following the presentation, Isabell shared her joy at seeing students stream through the gates with excitement, a sight that reminded her of the early days.

Adding to the significance of the event, esteemed journalist and author Annabel Crabb engaged the audience in a live interview, sharing insights into gender equality and the progress still to be made. She spoke candidly about her conversations with women in politics, encouraging students to reflect on the role of women in their lives and to express gratitude where it is due.

Language Teacher Sabrina Casu spoke about the evolution of women in sport, highlighting key milestones and the ongoing fight for recognition and equality. As she spoke about her preparation for the Boston Marathon, Ms Casu reflected on women’s suffrage and Kathrine Switzer’s impact in making long-distance running accessible to all. She closed her speech with a message of encouragement, hoping to inspire her students and empower them to participate.

The performing arts also played a central role in the celebration. Year 12 student Luci Cperformed an extract from her developing HSC Individual Performance on Nell Gwynn, a trailblazing 17th-century actress who challenged the norms of her time. The IGS Voices choir delivered a stirring rendition of I Am Woman, paying tribute to Australian singer Helen Reddy and her enduring feminist anthem.

The assembly was a vibrant reminder of the power of women’s voices, past and present. This year’s International Women’s Day reinforced the importance of recognising those who came before us while striving for a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
