IGS Dux of 2024 Christopher Czernecki combined fresh knowledge from his Mathematics Extension 2 studies and Science Extension to create a working aerial suitable for the next generation of CubeSats.
Christopher, who joined IGS in Year 3, was most passionate about Mathematics and Science courses throughout his schooling.
“For Science Extension, I chose something to research and did an experiment. I constructed and tested an antenna,” he said.
“It was a lot of work and a lot of fun.
“I looked at different antenna designs, and found a report published only a couple of months before I started. It was a new design for CubeSats, which needed to be tested and reviewed.
“I reconstructed it with cheaper materials.”
Although Christopher’s construction was by hand and “imperfect”, his aerial’s performance was within a range of the one described – an impressive result.
Christopher said he very much enjoyed taking Maths Extension 2.
“It’s a very good course to study, with new concepts you wouldn’t really think about.”
He applied his new knowledge from the Complex Numbers unit to his Science Extension project.
While at IGS, Christopher enjoyed taking part in a national cyber security competition, Cyber Taipan. His IGS team made the national finals.
Christopher thanked his teachers.
“Dr Kennett was absolutely amazing, and the rest of the Science and Maths teachers were very supportive,” he said.
Christopher, who is interested in pursuing a career in the space industry, has been offered early entry into Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science courses at UNSW.
