Immersive Learning Across Languages

From Tallong to the city and everywhere in between, this year’s Language Camp was full of creativity, culture and conversation. Whether it was crafting characters, building volcanoes or folding origami, students from Years 4 to 6 spent three immersive days learning language through hands-on experiences, guided by our dedicated Language and support staff.

Set against the peaceful bushland of Tallong, German students took on science challenges – in German, of course. From building periscopes to erupting volcanoes, the experience combined outdoor learning, teamwork and language, with plenty of discovery along the way.

The Italian camp, held at the Edmund Rice Retreat and Conference Centre, drew inspiration from commedia dell’arte. Students created unique characters, developing their own mottos, masks and monologues. Each performance gave students the chance to describe their persona’s look, personality and passions – all in Italian.

The Japanese group began their immersion at School, with a springtime theme that inspired cooking sessions and seasonal activities. Students prepared onigiri and explored other popular foods and traditions of the season. Once at camp, they enjoyed Japanese games, origami and quizzes, building language skills through movement and play.

Meanwhile, the Chinese camp celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival. Students explored the legend of the moon goddess Chang’e through drama, singing and dancing. They also took part in a tea tasting, turning tradition into a multi-sensory language experience.

As always, Language Camp encouraged students to step outside the classroom – and their comfort zones – to communicate, create and connect.

Thank you to all the teachers, Language staff and support team who brought this year’s camp to life.
