Kindy students of Japanese explore Setsubun

Kindergarten students of Japanese enjoyed learning about setsubun "a bean-throwing festival", celebrated on 3 February in Japan..

“People in Japan throw roasted beans around the house saying ‘Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!’ (Devils out, happiness in) in order to drive away the evil spirits that bring misfortune and bad health with them and bring luck,” said Japanese Language Teacher Machiko Sensei.

“It is common for a member of family to wear the mask of an oni (ogre) and for other members to throw beans at him or her.

“Our Kindy Japanese students learned how the day is celebrated and enjoyed making their own ‘oni no omen’ mask by colouring it in while learning colours in Japanese.”
