Language and Connections

During the recent holidays, IGS students participated in transformative cultural exchanges across Europe, visiting France, Germany, Italy and Spain. These immersive experiences provided firsthand insights into diverse education systems, language immersion and cultural traditions, strengthening global connections and deepening their appreciation for international perspectives.

France

IGS students engaged in enriching exchange visits to Lycée Aristide Briand in Évreux and Lycée Jean Monnet in Montpellier, gaining firsthand experience of the French education system and culture.

At Lycée Aristide Briand, students explored the school’s academic and vocational programs, attended classes, and took part in cultural excursions, including a treasure hunt in Évreux, a visit to Rouen, and a short film festival.

At Lycée Jean Monnet, students discovered the school’s extensive language offerings and its unique status as the only school in France teaching all seven art disciplines, including cinema, dance, theatre and circus arts. Celebrating three decades of exchange between the two schools, the visit reinforced strong ties between IGS and its French counterpart.

Beyond the classroom, students formed close bonds with host families, embraced local traditions and practised speaking French at home between 50% and 100% of the time, enhancing both their confidence and fluency.

Germany

IGS students took part in an immersive exchange in Bad Salzuflen, beginning with a visit to Paderborn, where they explored the city’s historic cathedral and lively Christmas markets. At IGS’s sister school, they gained insight into the German education system, experiencing early start times, a recently reinstated 13-year graduation structure and a strong emphasis on language learning.

During their six-week stay, students fully integrated into school life, attending classes, practising German and taking part in cultural activities. They also explored Bad Salzuflen, engaged in holiday traditions with host families and celebrated Christmas and New Year, strengthening their connection to German culture and fostering lasting international friendships.

Italy

Continuing a 20-year partnership, IGS students took part in an exchange at Liceo Antonio Rosmini in Rovereto, immersing themselves in the Italian education system and local culture. They received private Italian lessons three times a week, refining their language skills with tailored support.

Outside the classroom, students explored Rovereto’s historic sites, enjoyed traditional Italian cuisine, and embraced winter activities such as skiing and ice skating in the nearby mountains. Many were thrilled to experience a snowy Christmas, making their stay even more memorable. This exchange strengthened their language proficiency and provided a deeper appreciation of Italian culture and history.

These exchanges provided IGS students with invaluable opportunities to develop their language skills, embrace new cultures and build meaningful international connections. Whether through academics, host family experiences or holiday traditions, their time in Europe was a testament to the power of global learning.

Thank you to Regine Berghofer Director of Languages and all involved in makingto make these exchanges possible for our students.
