Making Waves with Every Lap

On Tuesday 25 February, IGS held its High School swimming carnival, filling Ryde aquatic Centre with energy and excitement. The day began with some of the longer distance events, 100m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle, followed by 50m races across age groups.

Each race had its own story, whether it was a close finish, a surprise burst of speed, or a relay that came down to the final fingertip touch.

Teachers and House Leaders kept the energy high, supporting swimmers with encouragement and enthusiasm. Our teachers ensured the event ran smoothly, from marshalling races to recording times with efficiency.

House colours lined the stands as Baado, Kuyal, Bamal and Gura chanted for their teams. As the day neared its end, the relays became a focal point, with crucial house points at stake. Even those racing for enjoyment became fully immersed in the competition, giving their all in the final stretch

The students triumphed in the student versus staff relay to close out the day, with a thrilling finish in the final lap as Sienna, a strong swimmer, powered through to secure the win.

In the end, Gura claimed victory with 1341 points, followed by Bamal with 1234, Baado close behind at 1227, and Kuyal with 1069. Gura now leads in the House competition with many more events to come in 2025.

Liz Turner, member of the Staff Wellbeing Team organised a staff best dressed competition with the following winners:

1st place: Janine Joseph (Gura)

2nd place: Megan Sampson (Kuyal)

3rd place: David Mueller and Jen Arapakis (Marshalling students for races)

Best overall house spirit: Gura (Gareth Douse before the carnival and Phoebe Hussey at the carnival)

Thank you to the High School PDHPE staff for coordinating the event, and to all staff who did their part on the day.

We look forward to the Primary School Carnival, next week on Tuesday 4 February.
