Sacred Earth, Sustainable Futures

Early Learning

IGS Early Learning was invited to take part in a special program at the Australian Museum, recognising the School’s commitment to embedding First Nations perspectives and sustainability practices in education.

Special Visitors to IGS ELC
Ahead of the museum visit, IGS welcomed two special guests—Sally Giblin, CoFounder of Be The Future, and Bonnie Cochrane, founder of TIPIAC—who have collaborated on the Australian Museum program. During their visit to the Early Learning Centre, they observed the children’s engagement with First Nations knowledge, language and sustainability practices.

Victoria Kirkwood led a tour of the ELC, sharing her passions with Bonnie and Sally. They were impressed by the meaningful work being done daily by the children, staff and families.

Sacred Earth, Sustainable Futures: First Nations Climate Playhouse
Children visited the Australian Museum in small groups with their teachers and participated in one of two interactive experiences designed to inspire learning, connection and environmental responsibility.

As part of Climate Action Week Sydney 2025, this world-first interactive climate solutions experience blended First Nations knowledge of Caring for Country with nature-based sustainability solutions. Designed to educate and empower, the experience took children on a journey through:

Connect – A visually immersive Acknowledgement of Country and creative activity using natural inks.

Explore – Interactive floor projection games where children used their hands and feet to ‘grow’ native trees.

Imagine – A Duplo-powered mission to reimagine a greener Sydney, inspired by First Nations knowledge.

Empower – Crafting native seed bombs for planting at home or in the community.

This experience is supported by a 2024 Innovation and Ideas Grant from the City of Sydney and will be delivered by First Nations-owned businesses TIPIAC Pty Ltd and Be The Future, in collaboration with additional First Nations businesses.

Burra Interactive Play Space
Children will also have the opportunity to explore the Burra Interactive Play Space, an innovative learning environment that follows burra (eel) on its migratory journey across estuaries, rivers, rock pools and out to sea. This immersive experience integrates Western science and First Nations knowledge, highlighting the importance of caring for Country and each other. Children are encouraged to touch, listen and explore as they trace the lifecycle of the burra through sensory walls, interactive play zones, and a giant eel structure.
