Solar Car Challenge

By Jennifer Arapakis

In Science, we completed a topic in Term 1 about Energy. This unit provides an introduction to the concept of energy and exposes students to hands-on practical experiences of energy transformations. We look in detail at energy in the form of movement, heat and electricity. We focus particularly on students’ understanding of heat as a form of energy and how critical it is to the safe and efficient use of resources.

The Solar Car Challenge is an opportunity for students to see this transformation with their own eyes, by learning how solar panels work and then putting it into practice by building their own solar car. This is an amalgamation of all elements of STEM. Additionally, they have the opportunity to be innovative in the design of their car if they wish to reduce its weight or add a structure to make it more aerodynamic.
