Teacher Accreditation Achievements at IGS

By Michelle Weir

At IGS, we take great pride in our exceptional teaching staff. Under the Teacher Accreditation Act 2004, all NSW teachers must be accredited according to Australian standards to teach in NSW schools. These professional standards reflect a teacher’s attributes, knowledge, understanding and skills, underscoring their commitment to continuous development and improvement of effective practices that enhance student learning.

IGS staff are dedicated to upholding these standards, ensuring that they consistently meet the Australian Teaching Standards and deliver the highest quality instruction in the classroom.

Experienced Teacher Accreditation

This year, we are proud to celebrate some remarkable achievements. Seven of our teachers successfully attained their Experienced Teacher accreditation. This milestone offers teachers an opportunity to reflect on and further develop their teaching practices. The accreditation process, which spans approximately 18 months, requires teachers to present evidence demonstrating their proficiency across all 37 teaching descriptors. The applications are assessed by Independent Schools Teacher Accreditation Authority – ISTAA

We congratulate Lucy Haynes, Patrice Marchbank, Madison Holness, David Cameron, Gareth Douse, Amelia Phillips and Alex Toomey Westcott, who all achieved Experienced Teacher 2024.

Jessica Price – Achieved Highly Accomplished Teacher

Earlier this year, Jessica Price successfully achieved accreditation as a Highly Accomplished Teacher (HAT). This prestigious recognition by NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), is a testament to Jessica’s dedication, skill and hard work. She completed the process  in 12 months, instead of the usual 3 years.  The  HALT process involves  submitting three complex portfolios including extensive annotated documentation.

The rigorous nature of HAT Accreditation means that Highly Accomplished Teachers constitute less than 1% of the teaching workforce. Since the first HALTs were recognised in 2010, only 310 have been successful in NSW and there are just 1,400 HALTs across Australia out of 515,000 nationally registered teachers. Jessica’s achievement is not only a significant personal milestone but also a major accomplishment for our school. Highly Accomplished Teachers are rare and we are incredibly fortunate to have Jessica among our staff.
