The Launch of Learning Journeys 2.0

On Monday, members of the IGS Community came together to celebrate a remarkable milestone—the launch of Learning Journeys 2.0, an anniversary book marking 40 years of bold beginnings and the incredible people who have shaped our School.

The event opened with a warm welcome from Principal Shauna Colnan, who reflected on the significance of IGS’s history and the powerful stories captured in Learning Journeys 1.0, the book that commemorated the school’s 30th anniversary a decade ago.

“I remember applying for the role of Principal in June 2014, and the Chair of the Board, Larissa Cook, gave me my own copy of the just-published Learning Journeys 1,” Shauna shared. “This vibrant coffee table book had been a 30th birthday gift from the School Community. It was a labour of love. I opened the book and couldn’t put it down. I read it and re-read it. In fact, it’s been an important reference book for me throughout my time as Principal.”

She went on to recount the incredible origins of IGS—a true David and Goliath story—led by Professor Reg St Leon, a visionary educator who believed in the fundamental right of Australian children to receive a bilingual education. From the School’s earliest days, the IGS Community has demonstrated remarkable resilience, withstanding lockouts, protests, legal battles and financial hardships to ensure the School’s survival and growth.

Fast forward to 2024, and IGS has continued to evolve and thrive. Learning Journeys 2.0 captures the past decade of transformation, highlighting key moments such as the introduction of strategic plans, the expansion of the curriculum by 20 new courses, the launch of the SAGE program for Middle School students, and the addition of new facilities, including the Peace Garden, the Global Learning Centre, the Design Centre, Art Studios, a Fitness Centre and the Bibliothèque. The School also introduced a new leadership structure for Year 12 students, commissioned an original School anthem by Australian composer Paul Jarman, and saw the golden era of IGS musicals take centre stage.

The journey was not without challenges. The global pandemic tested the resilience of the IGS Community, reinforcing the vital role a school plays in the lives of students and families. Through it all, the spirit of IGS remained strong.

“As we gather tonight, we celebrate the completion of this incredible project and the people who made it possible,” Shauna said. “We are so grateful to each and every one of you for the role you have played in our School’s history, particularly over the last 10 years. Together, we have honoured the past, treasured the present and shaped the future.”

The evening also featured words from Alex Peters School Author who shared insights into the process of creating Learning Journeys 2.0. Alex expressed her deep gratitude for being trusted with the responsibility of working on this project over the last 12-18 months. She spoke passionately about how she treasured every moment in the process and emphasised the collaborative efforts behind the book and the dedication of the team that brought it to life. Special mentions included Alison Handmer Copy Editor and Proofreader, Tracy James Art Director and Designer and Allison Lee Situational and Portrait Photographer, as well as Phoebe Chin School Archivist.

Additionally, longtime IGS educator and Director of Dramatic Arts Rita Morabito who has been part of IGS since day one, reflected on her deep love for the School and the many treasured memories she has made over the years of her journey at IGS. Rita concluded by sharing a touching video with the audience showcasing IGS from its earlier days.

The launch of Learning Journeys 2.0 was not only a celebration of the School’s past but also a moment to look ahead to an exciting future. As guests mingled and shared stories, it was clear that the heart of IGS remains as strong as ever—rooted in a passionate Community dedicated to learning, growth and innovation.
