The Power of Pet Therapy

Every week, IGS students eagerly anticipate a special visitor—one of the much-loved therapy dogs from Paws Pet Therapy. Alternating between Charlie and Rocky, these gentle and affectionate companions have been brightening School days since 2021, offering comfort, connection and a well-deserved break for students of all ages.

Through the Paws Pet Therapy program, trained therapy dogs visit schools, hospitals and community spaces to support wellbeing and reduce stress. Their presence at IGS has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm, providing students with a calming and joyful experience amid their busy school days.

Interacting with therapy dogs has been shown to lower stress levels, improve mood and enhance social interactions. The simple act of patting or spending time with a friendly dog can help students feel more at ease, particularly during high-pressure periods such as assessments and exams. For students who may struggle with anxiety, shyness or communication challenges, therapy dogs offer a non-judgmental presence that fosters emotional wellbeing and confidence.

The initiative aligns with IGS’s commitment to student wellbeing, recognising the important role that social and emotional learning plays in education. Programs like Paws Pet Therapy not only bring joy but also contribute to a supportive and inclusive School environment where students can feel valued and cared for.

Both Charlie and Rocky, with their affectionate nature and wagging tails, have become beloved members of the IGS Community. Under the guidance of their dedicated handlers Andrea and Dahlia, they visit classrooms, join students for quiet reading sessions and offer gentle companionship to those in need of a little extra support.

This heartwarming initiative is just one of the many ways IGS is fostering a positive and nurturing environment for students. Whether it’s a friendly nuzzle or a wagging tail, Charlie and Rocky continue to make a lasting impact—one paw at a time.
