Adrienne Toohey is the Assistant Head of Mathematics at IGS, but like all great teachers, she brings more than just academic lessons to school. Outside the classroom, Ms Toohey is an international DJ, balancing her passion for music with her love for education.
Ms Toohey’s DJ career spans over 10 years, with experience performing in Sydney and internationally in cities like New York, Berlin, and London. A key figure in Sydney’s music scene, she’s recorded sets for Boiler Room and Resident Advisor, and spent six years hosting FBi Radio’s Saturday Sunset show. Check out her sets here.
Beyond her own DJ career, Ms Toohey mentored aspiring female DJs through FBi’s Dance Class program and helped run parties with the Rimbombo crew, known for their underground sound.
In 2023, she launched IGS’s DJ Club with just one student. By 2024, Ms Toohey had raised the club’s profile by DJing at school events like the Athletics Carnival and International Day, growing the group to 10 students from Years 7 to 10. The club not only teaches technical skills like beat matching and mixing but also encourages students to craft DJ sets that reflect their unique tastes.
It’s refreshing and inspiring for students to see their teachers have other skills and passions, and Ms Toohey’s blend of teaching and DJing offers students a unique space to explore their creativity while mastering the art of performance.
