Where in the World Are They? #15

Paul Galea talks to IGS Alums Roman Kerekes-Shaw (2013), Jotaro Howard-Shibuya (2017) and Laura Whitehead (2015)

Roman Kerekes Shaw – Class of 2013

I moved to New York six months after high school where I graduated from Parsons School of Design with a degree in Strategic Design and Management. I lived in NY for five years studying, DJing and starting a fashion label called Jody Just.

Now based back in Sydney, my studio is actually just down the road from IGS. At the moment I’m working on different projects including a collaboration with Nike, a suit store Umi Nori co-founded in 2019 with my Kelly St bestie, Ziyad, as well as dabbling in music management which landed me a #1 ARIA album award through one of my artists.

If you make music send demos to roman@vtwelve.studio or come by the studio to say hi, and maybe buy a new outfit too. Here is a recent article on my fashion and Jody Just.

Jotaro Howard Shibuya – Class of 2017

After I graduated back in 2017, I spent my time saving up and then backpacking through Europe (guilty!) with lots of beautiful IGS friends. I loved going to Slovenia and Montenegro in particular, if anyone’s planning a Europe trip soon.

I spent a year at Sydney University once I got back, but, needing a change, ended up transferring to Melbourne University to finish my degree. This ended up being a pretty amazing decision, and I loved my time down there. Melbourne itself is great fun, but I think it also just felt good to be trying somewhere different. Plus, I’m not sure if I’ll ever beat living in a Carlton North share house with my best mates.

I still see too much of my IGS friends, and occasionally even bump into some of my favourite teachers. I can’t believe how often I find myself wishing I took better advantage of the incredible language teachers and language learning opportunities at School because it is just nowhere near as good, or as fun, when you leave. Sorry Ms Alonso! I know you tried.

Earlier this year, I moved to Tokyo where I’m living in an apartment with my 89 year old Jichan, sort of just cruising and working on my Japanese for a little while. I should be poking around here until the end of September, so make sure to hit me up for a beer if you’re ever in the area.

Laura Whitehead – Class of 2015

After a gap year in Europe and the Dominican Republic, I moved to Canberra in 2017 to study at the Australian National University. I studied a Bachelor of Arts (History/Anthropology) and a Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics. I realised late into my undergraduate study that my passion lies in the environment, and I am now most of the way through a coursework Masters of Environment.

I joined the Australian Public Service early last year working in the Commonwealth Department of Environment (DCCEEW). I moved to Sale, Victoria a month ago after 7 years in Canberra to follow my partner who is training to be a RAAF pilot.

While I still dabble in snowboarding, over the last 18 months I have been getting into running and I completed my first marathon and Olympic distance triathlon last year.
