Since 2016, sustainability has been a central part of our School’s strategic vision. IGS has a vision to be a lighthouse school for sustainability, with a focus on six key areas:
Our student-led Sustainable Futures group, established by Mr Carmelo Fedele in 2017, plays a vital role in driving sustainability initiatives within our school. This group empowers students to take ownership of projects and actively engage in environmental issues.
In August 2018, IGS established a Sustainability Framework to promote sustainability in the School’s campus, activities, and events. The framework reflects IGS’s dedication to using Earth’s resources wisely, with ongoing monitoring and evaluation of operations.
In 2020, IGS appointed Carmelo Fedele as Head of Sustainability, underlining our commitment to sustainable practices in school operations and education. Our first student Sustainability Portfolio Leader was appointed in 2021, reinforcing the importance of student involvement in sustainability leadership.
IGS has adopted the Eco-Schools model to structure and organise the School’s sustainability initiatives.
IGS is the first Australian school to be a founding member of The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS). TASS is an international network of schools working together to help accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. The Alliance connects sustainability practitioners in schools around the world, sharing their learnings and amplifying their impact.
Members share a commitment to the principles of the Sustainable Schools Charter.
IGS has also been recognised with:
Our Solar Project aims to expand the School’s current solar infrastructure by installing a solar panel system on the Reg St Leon Building rooftop, on Kelly Street. This project will strengthen our efforts to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly in our energy use.
