We are delighted to share with you our 2024 HSC Highlights. Our students have done very well. They have worked with focus, tenacity and passion. We celebrate their personal achievements. We also thank our dedicated teachers for their inspiration, guidance and expertise, and warmly acknowledge the encouragement of family and friends.

HSC Highlights

FIRST IN STATE

Students who received first place in an HSC course and also achieved a result in the highest band possible are celebrated in the First in Course merit list. Placing first in an HSC course is an enormous achievement. Students who receive this result are celebrated at an annual awards ceremony presented by the Deputy Premier. The following students achieved First in State:

  • Ajay Kantouros achieved First in State for Spanish Extension with 49 out of 50
  • Karam Singh Hartmann achieved First in State for German Beginners with 100 out of 100.
NSW TOP ACHIEVERS

The following student received one of the highest places in an HSC course and also received a result in the highest band.

  • Chiara Marchi achieved second in the State in Spanish Extension with 48 out of 50.
NSW ALL-ROUND ACHIEVERS

Each year, students who achieve results in the top band for at least 10 units of HSC courses are recognised as All-Round Achievers by the NSW Education Standards Authority. This year three IGS students gained such an honour.

Congratulations to Karam Singh Hartmann, Antigone Marchbank and Audrey Storer for achieving more than 90 per cent in at least 10 units.

NSW DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVERS

There were 66 Distinguished Achievers who between them received 129 honourable mentions by being awarded 90 per cent or above in at least one course, which is the highest band possible.

ATAR HIGHLIGHTS

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a rank (not a mark or score) between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position relative to all the students in their age group. Universities use the ATAR to help them select students for their courses. Strong results at IGS included: 

  • Karam Singh Hartmann with the highest ATAR of 98.75
  • 11 students achieving ATARs of 95 or above, representing 11.6 per cent of the Year 12 cohort
  • 29.4 per cent of the Year 12 cohort achieving ATARs of 90 and above
  • two thirds of the Year 12 cohort achieving ATARs of 80 and above.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
  • 100 per cent of students studying the following courses achieved results in the top band possible: German Extension, Italian Extension, Japanese Continuers and Japanese Extension.
  • 100 per cent of students studying the following courses achieved results in the top two bands: Dance, Drama, English Extension 1, English Extension 2, Mathematics Extension 2, Music Extension, Science Extension, Textiles and Design, Chinese Continuers, French Extension, Italian Continuers, Japanese Beginners, Spanish Extension.
  • Students completing the challenging English Extension courses performed particularly well with 78 per cent of students across both courses achieving results in the highest band possible.
  • In Japanese Beginners, students achieved at 16.17 per cent above the State mean.
  • In Japanese Continuers, students achieved at 12.09 per cent above the State mean.
  • In Aboriginal Studies, students achieved at 11.32 per cent above the State mean.
  • In Biology, students achieved at 8.74 per cent above the State mean.
  • In Textiles and Design, students achieved at 8.42 per cent above the State mean.
  • In Visual Arts, 37.5 per cent of the class achieved a Band 6 of 90 percent or above.

EARLY UNIVERSITY OFFERS
IGS students have received 125 early offers to courses at universities such as UTS, UNSW, ANU, Macquarie University, WSU, Notre Dame, ACU and the University of Melbourne. Diverse areas of study include Natural and Physical Sciences, Information Technology, Engineering and related Technologies, Health, Management and Commerce, Society and Culture and Creative Arts. Congratulations to these students. 

Outstanding HSC results for accelerated students

Students may complete HSC courses early via acceleration or compression. We congratulate 36 IGS Year 11 students and one Year 6 student who completed HSC courses this year.

37 per cent of these students achieved 90 per cent or higher in one or more HSC course.

Acceleration in Languages

A total of 23 of our Year 11 students accelerated in Languages. Students accelerated across five languages, in French Continuers, German Continuers, Italian Continuers, Japanese Continuers and Japanese Extension and Chinese Continuers. These students achieved a mean of 87.7 per cent and a median of 88 per cent.

The highest results in each course were achieved by:

  • Anne-Catherine Linzer with 96 per cent for German Continuers
  • Billie Messiter with 93 per cent for Japanese Continuers and 94 per cent for Japanese Extension which is a one unit course
  • Stella Manos with 92 per cent for Chinese Continuers
  • Maya Isbister, Zahra Laurans-Wall and Mia Wroniak with 88 per cent for French Continuers
  • Tomas Mimmocchi and Emilia Williams with 87 per cent for Italian Continuers.
Acceleration in Mathematics and Biology

Thirteen Year 11 students accelerated in Mathematics Advanced, achieving a mean of 88.5 per cent and a median of 87 per cent.

The highest result in Mathematics Advanced was earned by Matthew Lau with 92 per cent, while Oliver Beerden attained 89 per cent in Biology.

This year the youngest student in New South Wales completing an HSC course was IGS Year 6 student Jakob Lal who achieved a result of 86 per cent in Mathematics Advanced. Next year, in Year 7 Jakob is taking on HSC Physics, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2. Read more about Jakob’s HSC experience here.

Aboriginal Studies by Compression

Thirteen Year 11 students completed both Year 11 and Year 12 Aboriginal Studies in one year. Their mean result was 86.9 per cent with a median of 89 per cent.

The highest result of 91 per cent was achieved by Greta Gaertner, Eva Harris-Watts, Georgina Miller and Anna Sulan.
