Students who received first place in an HSC course and also achieved a result in the highest band possible are celebrated in the First in Course merit list. Placing first in an HSC course is an enormous achievement. Students who receive this result are celebrated at an annual awards ceremony presented by the Deputy Premier. The following students achieved First in State:
The following student received one of the highest places in an HSC course and also received a result in the highest band.
Each year, students who achieve results in the top band for at least 10 units of HSC courses are recognised as All-Round Achievers by the NSW Education Standards Authority. This year three IGS students gained such an honour.
Congratulations to Karam Singh Hartmann, Antigone Marchbank and Audrey Storer for achieving more than 90 per cent in at least 10 units.
There were 66 Distinguished Achievers who between them received 129 honourable mentions by being awarded 90 per cent or above in at least one course, which is the highest band possible.
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a rank (not a mark or score) between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position relative to all the students in their age group. Universities use the ATAR to help them select students for their courses. Strong results at IGS included:

Each year, there are many contributions to the public discourse about students’ achievement in the HSC. One of these is The Sydney Morning Herald‘s school rankings.
The Herald defines “success rate” as the number of high scores (90 per cent and above) expressed as a percentage of exams sat. Like many NSW schools, IGS is non-selective and we pride ourselves on our commitment to personal achievement in a highly inclusive environment, aiming to support every student to reach for their best.
Among more than a thousand high schools in NSW, this year IGS is ranked 79, up 43 places from 2023 with a “success rate” of 20.81 per cent. The median “success rate” for NSW schools was 5.47 per cent.
While rankings may provide one measure of “success”, we commend all our students on their many achievements and contributions, some of which are set out in this summary.

The kind of people our School produces are the kind of people you want to see in the real world… That is why, in many ways, I think our School is as significant as the Beatniks taking part in a liturgical “jazz mass” or the Salon des Refusés – Salon of Rejects – who revolutionised painting with bold chiaroscuro and unblended brushstrokes. IGS is changing the world, one Alum at a time, to be a more open place.
This is an excerpt from Antigone‘s Speech Night Address at the State Theatre in December 2024.
I decided, consciously yet nervously, to extend myself. It was terrifying, but also exhilarating. I discovered many things about myself: perhaps at another school, I wouldn’t have been so easily welcomed. But here, at this school, I was given room to grow into myself without judgement…
This is an excerpt from Karam’s Speech Night Address.
